Transportation & Shipping-Project Location/Construction Workfront

Modules: Preservation for module transport is necessary to ensure equipment and materials installed in a module arrive at the construction location in acceptable condition. Preservation and inspection consideration examples are listed below:

Exterior Surface Protection-Motors/pumps/mechanical equipment, electrical terminations, blinds/spacers, insulation tie-ins, electrical/junction boxes, lighting, instruments, valve stems/actuators etc. should be preserved before module sail away

*Air cooler fan blades etc., need to be locked in place to avoid rotation during transportation*

*Ship loose items such as valves or crates must be properly preserved if shipped with module*

Interior Surface Protection-Open ended pipe and flanged ends of pipe required covers/impact protection, exchangers/vessels/drums need nitrogen purging, fogging, or desiccant. Electrical panels/junction boxes require emitters.

Material Withdraw Request(MWR): Once materials and equipment are required at the construction work front, a field engineer or a material planner will send a material request to the warehouse for a delivery to a particular construction work front.  The procurement team will locate the equipment/materials requested and ensure no USOD is associated with the equipment/materials. The procurement team should ensure equipment and materials have sufficient outdoor protection before shipping to the construction work front.  Field engineering should be consulted if questions arise as to the acceptability of outdoor protection.

Transportation @ Shipping: The procurement teamarranges transportation to the construction site the majority of the time.  Care should be taken as to how the equipment and materials are loaded and transported to the construction work front.  Once the equipment and materials arrive at the construction area, offloading the items is normally the responsibility of the construction team.

Staging Area: Once the equipment/materials arrive at the construction site, “care, custody, and control” belong to the construction team.  The construction team should have dunnage in place, weather protection, etc. If equipment and materials are not going to be used/installed in short order.  Field Engineering or the preservation team should be prepared to continue preservation activities.  Unfortunately, the construction teams often request materials and equipment be sent to the construction work front too soon.  Many times, rules of credit allow for construction to claim materials as staged, and credit is claimed upon arrival.  Field engineering should assess material requests and push back on the timing of deliveries if installation is not imminent. Stagging materials and equipment just to claim credit is a reality in the construction world.  Field storage conditions and storage space are often less than ideal at the construction work front.

Every effort should be made at the construction work front to ensure equipment and materials stay clean, dry, and closed.  A few weeks of poor preservation and storage conditions can undo years of preservation and maintenance.  To avoid unnecessary searching for items delivered to the construction work front, precise delivery locations should be documented for materials and equipment.  RFID transmitters are very useful for locating items delivered to the construction work front.  Once materials and equipment are in their final locations, RFID removal is warranted.  RFID transmitters should not be left in place during startup/commissioning activities as RFID transmitters are not always intrinsically safe.
