Protecting your critical surface areas such as the machined surface of a flange face from corrosion is a must in the oil and gas construction industry. Not doing so could
cost you tens of thousands of dollars in repairs, delays to your project and cost your client lost revenue if you don’t hit the startup date. There are many different types of corrosion inhibitors available in the market today. There are solvent-based, water-based, oil-based, some are cleaners, and others are lubricants. We found that many of these are limited in scope or just don’t work.
At P3 we focus on protection and preservation of piping systems for oil and gas construction companies and end users. We needed a corrosion inhibitor that would work in conjunction with our flangeDOTS® and other P3 products. In P3-CI™ we developed all the things we thought were important and valuable in a corrosion inhibitor, including quickly drying which allows the application of the flangeDOTS® within minutes. P3-CI™ works great indoors or out and in any environment. It can be brushed on, sprayed on or wiped on with a cloth. You can even use it as a cleaner with a scouring pad to remove oils and dirt from critical surfaces while adding corrosion protection. P3-CI™ is non-flammable so it’s easy to ship and safe to store and can be cleaned off with a light solvent like denatured alcohol. P3-CI™ was developed specifically to work with our flangeDOTS® and with its addition to our product line, we now have a complete preservation system that protects and preserves not only the critical surface areas like flange faces but also the interior of pipe spools, valves and vessels by creating an airtight, watertight, corrosion resistant seal for your entire piping system.
How It Works
There is a multitude of corrosion inhibitors you can choose from in today’s market. There are a lot of products in the market and finding the right one for your application can be exhausting and expensive if it doesn’t work.
A corrosion preventative compound is a mixture of ingredients. These ingredients include: a solvent, products that prevent corrosion and, in a few products, an actual lubricant. The solvent carrier in P3-CI™ contains the other ingredients mentioned and it is heavier than water. The solvent molecule is smaller than a water molecule, therefore, the solvent sinks under the water/moisture on the area that is to be treated. P3-CI™ has a vapor pressure that allows it to vaporize 19.6 times faster than water, which means it can be used on vertical and inverted applications. This means that when the solvent vaporizes, it takes the water molecule with it; a process called hydrophobic. Also, because the solvent molecule is small, it can penetrate and remove moisture in close tolerance areas. When the solvent carrier vaporizes, it deposits all the other ingredients, the corrosion preventative, onto the surface of the treated areas.
The corrosion preventative compounds that are deposited have different roles in protecting the treated area. Some of the ingredients bond with “free” electrons found in the iron ion, preventing the formation of iron oxide, aka rust. Other ingredients form a “blocking” film to prevent moisture from coming in contact the base metal; this is important because for rust to form, both oxygen and water must be present.
P3-CI™ also contains a small molecular size lubricant that is prevents metal to metal contact, thereby, preventing fretting corrosion and/or galling. If P3-CI™ is applied onto pipe threads, the lubricant will reduce the amount of torque required for the mating surfaces.
